Hon Matia Kasaija, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development pointed out in the 2019/20 Financial Year Budget Speech ((Page 17, 56v) that among the priority actions to be undertaken was the promotion and expansion of the Uganda Industrial Research Institutes, industrial and technological incubation centre. He also noted that UIRI would establish regional and model value addition centres.
Currently UIRI has taken strides in increasing value addition centres in Uganda, adding to the existing plants in Lira District (peanut processing), Luwero (Essential oil processing), Mpigi (juice processing), and Kabale District (Mineral Water production) among others.
Upcoming centres include the Kumi District Peanut processing plant, Sheema District Silk processing and Bugweri District Textile plant.
Additionally UIRI in collaboration with Operation Wealth Creation has taken lead in developing a draft Master Plan for the proposed Industrial Park at Kyembogo in Kabarole and Kasese Districts.
The Institute continues to raise the standard for the development of Uganda’s manufacturing and technology sector, as the country aspires to reach the middle income status.
