The Instrumentation Division was founded in 2011 and is under the Technology Development Centre (TDC) at Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI). The division engages in the design and development of embedded systems applications in primarily healthcare, agriculture and energy. To date the division has a portfolio of over 7 projects of which 4 are medical devices. The division aims at creating products that are appropriate and affordable and can be translated to the market. In addition to in-house R &D the division engages in student training and mentorship activities with partners as well as repair and maintenance of various laboratory and workshop electronic equipment at UIRI.

Key Research Facilities, Infrastructure and Equipment:

• Instrumentation Design Laboratory that has Computers for software/firmware design, prototyping equipment that includes Measurement Devices, Oscilloscopes, Electronic Components, Bread boards, Soldering stations, microcontroller programmers, soldering stations CNC drilling and milling machine, 3D printer etc.
• Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Production Laboratory that has equipment to manufacture PCBs using the chemical etching, CNC milling and drilling methods (Bungard CNC machine) and Reflow Oven

Involvement in Research and Training Programmes:

• Annual industrial training program within Uganda that trains undergraduate students on electrical and computer engineering principles to equip them with hands on skills to design and prototype products.

Current Involvement in Research and Training Programmes:

• Associate partner in the Africa Biomedical Engineering Mobility (ABEM) project funded by the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission. The primary objective of ABEM is to build human and institutional capacity in Africa for needs based health technology research and development where postgraduate students are trained on skills and specializations that are not offered in their home institutions. UIRI offers laboratory access for these postgraduate students during their thesis development.
• UBORA (Euro-African Open Biomedical Engineering e-platform for innovation through education) project, which utilizes an e-infrastructure to train students on the co-creation, conceptualization and development of open medical devices underpinned by European Medical Device standards through design schools.
