The Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) hosted a delegation of 60 officers from the Police Command and Staff College Bwebajja, led by the Commandant, ACP Canon Dr. Barbara Alungat, for an institutional study visit.
The engagement forms part of a longstanding relationship between UIRI and the College dating back to 2015. UIRI has regularly hosted officers undertaking senior command and staff courses, providing them with practical exposure to Uganda's evolving industrial, technological and innovation ecosystem.
The delegation was received by UIRI Executive Director, Prof. Charles Kwesiga, who delivered a presentation highlighting the critical linkages between academia, security and industry in advancing sustainable socio-economic transformation.
During a guided tour of UIRI's facilities, the officers were exposed to a range of technologies, research initiatives and industrial applications being developed and supported by the Institute. Particular interest was drawn to emerging technologies with potential applications in public safety and security, including drone technology for traffic management, railway-crossing control systems, and emotion-sensor-based technologies, among other innovations.
The Commandant, ACP Canon Dr. Barbara Alungat, commended Prof. Kwesiga for building an institution that continues to make a significant contribution to Uganda's industrialisation agenda through Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
Reflecting on the continuous evolution of the Institute, Dr. Alungat remarked:
“I have a UIRI corner in my house because every time I bring students, I find something new.”
Her observation highlighted UIRI's continued focus on practical research, indigenous technology development, innovation and the translation of scientific knowledge into solutions relevant to industry and society.
The visit also provided an opportunity to explore areas for deeper institutional collaboration, potentially including wood technology and associated workshops, and textile technologies, among others.
