Microbiology and Biotechnology

Microbiology and Biotechnology supports product development, microbiological analytical services, quality assurance and biotechnology research for industry and community-facing innovation.

Laboratory profile

Microbiological analytical services for product quality

UIRI's Microbiology Laboratory was established to assist in product development and the provision of microbiological analytical services.

The laboratory supports in-built quality in products and processes, demonstrates compliance with national and international requirements and standards, and provides analytical services to industry.

Research approach

Working with communities and entrepreneurs

In research and development activities, UIRI works closely with communities and potential entrepreneurs to apply experimental research, create new knowledge and demonstrate technologies.

The work uses development techniques such as meetings, workshops, technology evaluation tours, demonstrations and participatory research methods.

Testing capacity

Microbiological analytical tests

Tests are carried out on food, water, beverages and pharmaceuticals for clients including food processors, exporters and the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Total Plate Count
  • Yeast and moulds
  • Total coliforms
  • Escherichia coli
  • Salmonella species

Development focus

Biotechnology and bioprocess engineering

The laboratory is repositioning as a centre for microbial biotechnology and bioprocess engineering by developing and deploying technologies for processing biological materials for commercial purposes.

Current research and development includes fungal enzyme applications in cassava processing, soy-based fermentation work, natural cosmetic formulations and commercialization support for small-scale processors.
