Scaling product development into viable production systems

Production Systems carries forward the work of Product Development by scaling up pilot plants and assuring their successful operation at commercially viable production levels.

The directorate creates functional models on which real industries can be built. It is also involved in modern packaging systems and runs a business incubation programme.

The directorate has five sections involved in practical production, value addition and enterprise support.

Training and incubation

Support for students, researchers and SMEs

Production Systems offers training, internship and incubation services to students, researchers and small and medium enterprises.

Business incubation services include production facilities, premises and equipment, technical support and product development. These services help firms build production capacity, improve product quality, strengthen marketing and packaging capacity, and increase market access.

Facilities, research, technology upgrading and advisory support

The directorate provides practical services that support production facility development, applied research and enterprise growth.

  • Designing production facilities and advising on suitable production equipment and tools
  • Providing supervision during installation of production equipment
  • Conducting applied research programmes relevant to SME needs
  • Supporting value addition, cost reduction, quality upgrading and process development
  • Upgrading and developing processing technologies for high-quality food products
  • Providing technical advice and consultancy services to start-ups and existing enterprises in food and bamboo industries

Meat Technology

Value-added meat processing and industry support

UIRI's Meat Technology Section was established in 1997 and operates under the Production Systems directorate.

The section leads development of value-added meat products through training, research and development, and technical advisory support services to Uganda's meat industry.

Its mission is to improve the capacity and competence of indigenous meat processing enterprises by advising and training them in value addition techniques for high-quality marketable meat products.

  • Product development of vegetable and fish sausages
  • Business incubation of meat processing entrepreneurs at UIRI's meat pilot plant
  • Value addition of meat in rural areas through partner centres in Busia, Arua and Soroti

Bakery Technology

Applied research and appropriate bakery processing technologies

The Bakery Technology Section was established in 1997 as part of UIRI's food processing work.

The section steers and conducts applied industrial research for the bakery industry and addresses the needs of local micro and medium-scale bakery enterprises by generating appropriate bakery processing technologies.

  • Equipping the Bakery Pilot Plant with new equipment
  • Research and development on utilization of available agricultural raw materials, especially stem and root tubers
  • Training micro and medium-scale entrepreneurs in bakery processing
  • Supporting incubatees through supervision and training in product and market strategy development

Dairy Technology

Dairy processing research, training and technology transfer

The Dairy Technology Section was set up in 1997 to conduct applied industrial research for the development of appropriate dairy processing technologies.

Its mission is to promote a successful dairy processing industry through research, training, technical assistance and technology transfer to micro and small-scale dairy processing enterprises.

The section supports reduction of production wastage, improved quality, safety stabilization, value addition and product diversification in Uganda's dairy industry.

Fruits and Vegetables

Value addition for local agro-processed products

The Fruits and Vegetables Section helps UIRI fulfill its mandate of value addition to local agro-processed products.

The section supports processing, product development, training and business incubation for fruit and vegetable enterprises.

  • Processing fruits and vegetables into juices, jams, sauces, pickles, nectars, wine, starch and dried products
  • Research into new products from fruits and vegetables
  • Training in processing and preservation, quality management, product development and agro-processing business management
  • Business incubation through training, technology transfer and facilities provision

Business incubation

A model for processing companies and industrial enterprise growth

UIRI's Business Incubation programme is a sustainable model for incubating processing companies, particularly but not only in agricultural products.

The Institute's vision is to be a model institution and centre of excellence for industrial incubation as incubation continues to grow within UIRI.
